Introduction & Default Settings

The management interface on the EdgeSwitch (ES) and EdgeSwitch X (ES-X) is a configurable interface that can be used to manage the device. The interface can be assigned a custom static IP address or rely on DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to obtain an address. By default, both the EdgeSwitch and EdgeSwitch X will try to obtain an address via DHCP and will use a fallback IP address if no server is found. The following default settings apply to the management interface:

  • EdgeSwitch (ES) Will try to obtain an address via DHCP and will fall back to using 192.168.1.2/24 if no server is found.
  • EdgeSwitch X (ES) Will try to obtain an address via DHCP and will fall back to using 192.168.1.20/24 if no server is found.

On both the ES and ES-X, the management interface is associated with VLAN1 by default.

Configuring the Management Interface

In the example setup below, both the ES-8-150W and the ES-10X attempted to obtain an address via DHCP but were not able to reach a DHCP server. This means that both switches resorted to using their respective fallback IP addresses, 192.168.1.2 on the ES and 192.168.1.20 on the ES-X. Both devices can be managed from the Web UI by using a workstation that is assigned a static IP address in the 192.168.1.0/24 range, 192.168.1.10 in this example. Afterwards, the management IP addresses on both switches can be changed.

Example setup where an EdgeSwitch (ES-8-150W) is powering an EdgeSwitch X (ES-10X) using 24V Passive PoE on port 1.

Follow the steps below to change the management interface settings on the ES-8-150W using the Web UI:

1. Configure a workstation with a static IP address in the 192.168.1.0/24 range.

2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the workstation to an available port on the EdgeSwitch (port 2 in this example).

3. Access the Web UI of the ES-8-150W by navigating to the 192.168.1.2 IP address using HTTPS.

4. Login using the default credentials:

Username: ubnt
Password: ubnt

GUI: Access the Web UI on the ES-8-150W.

5. Navigate to the Settings  settings.png  tab to change the management interface.

6. If you want to configure a static IP address, change the Network mode from DHCP to Static IP.

Settings > Management IP > Static IP

7. Fill out the available fields with your preferred network settings. In this example, the IP address is changed to 192.168.1.11/24.

IP Address: 192.168.1.11
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway IP: 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1
Secondary DNS: <optional>
Management VLAN ID: 1

8. Apply the changes.

ATTENTION: The existing HTTPS session will time out if the management IP address is changed.

Changing the VLAN to a different value will cause you to lose access to the device unless this new VLAN ID is also Untagged (U) on one of the ports
of the EdgeSwitch. See the How to Add VLANs article for more information.

9. Log back into the Web UI of the ES-8-150W by navigating to the 192.168.1.11 IP address using HTTPS.

Follow the steps below to change the management interface settings on the ES-10X using the Web UI:

2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the workstation to an available port on the EdgeSwitch X or power the switch using 24V Passive PoE on port 1 (see the topology diagram above).

NOTE: The PoE output mode can be configured in the Dashboard  dashboard.png  tab of the ES-8-150W.

3. Access the Web UI of the ES-8-150W by navigating to the 192.168.1.20 IP address using HTTPS.

4. Login using the default credentials:

Username: ubnt
Password: ubnt

GUI: Access the Web UI on the ES-10X.

5. Navigate to the Settings  settings.png  tab to change the management interface.

Settings > Management IP > Static IP

6. If you want to configure a static IP address, change the Network mode from DHCP to Static IP.

7. Fill out the available fields with your preferred network settings. In this example, the IP address is changed to 192.168.1.12/24.

IP Address: 192.168.1.12
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway IP: 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1
Secondary DNS: <optional>
Management VLAN ID: 1

8. Apply the changes.

9. Log back into the Web UI of the ES-10X by navigating to the 192.168.1.12 IP address using HTTPS.
