EdgeSwitch - Backup and Restore Configuration


Overview


Readers will leader how to backup and restore the configuration file of an EdgeSwitch. It is also possible to use this method to apply the same configuration to multiple EdgeSwitches.

NOTES & REQUIREMENTS:
Applicable to the latest EdgeSwitch firmware on all applicable EdgeSwitch models that include console ports. Knowledge of the Command Line Interface (CLI) and basic networking knowledge is required. Please see the Related Articles below for more information.

EdgeSwitch Configuration Files

The EdgeSwitch platform uses the following configuration files:

  • Running Config: The configuration that is currently active on the device. Automatically updated when configuration changes are made.
  • Startup/Boot Config: The configuration that is loaded when the EdgeSwitch boots up. Updated when the running config is saved.
  • Backup Config: Not generated automatically. The startup config can be backed up on the device (copied) to restore to a certain point in time.

GUI: Access the Graphical User Interface (GUI).

 

If you wish to backup the EdgeSwitch startup configuration file, follow the steps below:

1. Make sure that the running config is saved to the startup config by using the Save Configuration button in the top right of the GUI.

NOTE: You can also save the configuration under System > Configuration Storage > Save.

2. Navigate to the system utilities and transfer section.

System > Utilities > Transfer

3. Download the startup configuration from the EdgeSwitch using either HTTP(S), TFTP or FTP.

  • Click on the  icon under Download: Transfer a file from the device
  • Select File Type: Startup Configuration
  • Click on  to start the download
NOTE: The EdgeSwitch startup configuration file is called TempConfigScript.scr.

4. Verify the contents of the startup configuration by opening the TempConfigScript.scr file using a text editor.

If you wish to restore the device using the startup configuration file, follow the steps below:

1. Navigate to the system utilities and transfer section.

System > Utilities > Transfer

2. Upload a previously downloaded startup configuration file to the EdgeSwitch using either HTTP(S), TFTP or FTP.

  • Click on the  icon under Upload: Transfer a file to the device
  • Select File Type: Startup Configuration
  • Select File Browse: TempConfigScript.scr
  • Click on  to start the upload

3. Reboot the device to load the new startup configuration.

CLI: Access the command line interface (CLI). You can do this by using a program such as PuTTY.

 

If you wish to backup the EdgeSwitch startup configuration file, follow the steps below:

1. Enter privileged mode.

enable

2. Make sure that the running config is saved to the startup config.

write memory

3. Verify the contents of the startup configuration.

show startup-config

4. Transfer the startup configuration from the EdgeSwitch using either HTTP(S), TFTP or FTP.

copy nvram:startup-config tftp://192.168.1.10/TempConfigScript.scr

Mode........................................... TFTP
Set Server IP.................................. 192.168.1.10
Path........................................... ./
Filename....................................... TempConfigScript.scr
Data Type...................................... Text Configuration

Management access will be blocked for the duration of the transfer
Are you sure you want to start? (y/n) y

File transfer in progress. Management access will be blocked for the duration of the transfer. please wait...

File transfer operation completed successfully.
NOTE: You can choose a different name when copying the startup configuration.

5. Verify the contents of the startup configuration by opening the TempConfigScript.scr file using a text editor.

If you wish to restore the device using the startup configuration file, follow the steps below:

1. Enter privileged mode.

enable

2. Transfer the startup configuration to the EdgeSwitch using either HTTP(S), TFTP or FTP.

copy tftp://192.168.1.10/TempConfigScript.scr nvram:startup-config

Mode........................................... TFTP
Set Server IP.................................. 192.168.1.10
Path........................................... ./
Filename....................................... TempConfigScript.scr
Data Type...................................... Text Configuration

Download configuration file. Configuration will be applied upon next reboot.

3. Verify the contents of the startup configuration.

show startup-config

4. Reboot the device to load the new startup configuration.
