EdgeSwitch - Firmware Upgrade

 Overview


This article describes the steps needed to upgrade the EdgeSwitch (ES) firmware using either the Web-Management GUI or the Command Line Interface (CLI).

If the currently active firmware is 1.0.0 it may be necessary to incrementally upgrade to 1.0.1 before upgrading to the latest version. The latest EdgeSwitch firmware can be downloaded from the EdgeSwitch Download Section.

Applicable to EdgeSwitch models using all firmware versions. Knowledge of the Command Line Interface (CLI) and basic networking knowledge is required. Please see the Related Articles below for more information.

www.png   GUI STEPS: Access the switch Web-Management Portal (GUI).

1. Navigate to the firmware configuration and upgrade section.

Basic > Firmware Upgrade

 Note: On older versions this section is under System > Firmware > Configuration and Upgrade.

2. Upload the new firmware to the switch.

  • Click on the  icon for the backup firmware.
  • Upload the previously downloaded ES firmware and click on  to start the upload.
  • Select the newly uploaded firmware to be the next active firmware.

3. Restart the switch.

You will need a way to transfer files to and from the ES, for example a TFTP or FTP server.

CLI_circle.png  CLI STEPS: Access the command line interface (CLI). You can do this by using a program such as PuTTY to connect via SSH, Telnet or the console.

1. Enter privileged mode.

enable

2. Show the currently active and backup firmware.

show bootvar

3.  Upload the new firmware to the switch.

copy tftp://<ip-address>/<filename> backup
copy ftp://<user>@<ip-address>/<filename> backup
copy tftp://192.168.1.10/ES-eswh.v1.7.1.4993748.stk backup

Mode........................................... TFTP
Set Server IP.................................. 192.168.1.10
Path........................................... ./
Filename....................................... ES-eswh.v1.7.1.4993748.stk
Data Type...................................... Code            
Destination Filename........................... backup

Management access will be blocked for the duration of the transfer

4. Select the newly uploaded firmware to be the next active firmware.

boot system backup

5. Verify the active and backup firmware. 

show bootvar

info_i_25x25.png Note: The indicates the firmware that will boot after the next restart. If the command in step 3 was issued properly, it will boot the firmware in the backup location and it will replace the active firmware after restarting.

7. Restart the Switch.

8. Verify the active and backup firmware.
