UniFi Video - How to factory reset an NVR appliance?


The following guide is based on UniFi Video version 3.1.x and later. For airVision-based (v1.x-v2.x NVR) guides, please consult this KB article.


Note: Factory reset will remove all previous management settings and video data. Any custom configuration changes applied by the system administrator will be lost e.g. file-systems mounted on iSCSI volumes or locally attached external disk drives.


Note: The default IP address of the NVR appliance is (but will retrieve a DHCP-assigned address if a DHCP server is present).


Option One: GUI

  1. Open the NVR landing page in a browser (http://<NVR_APPLIANCE_IP>/). You do not need to include the default port "7443" since you are only accessing the HTTP page for admin configuration panel.
  2. Choose the 'Device Configuration' icon for the NVR (located at the top right corner of the page).
  3. Login as "root" system account (username/password should be root/ubnt).
  4. Navigate to the "Maintenance" tab.
  5. Click "Reset to Defaults" button next to "Reset To Factory Defaults:"
  6. Re-open the NVR landing page in a browser (http://<NVR_APPLIANCE_IP>/).

Option Two: CLI

  1. Open a shell session to the NVR appliance e.g. ssh root@<NVR_APPLIANCE_IP>
  2. Enter the following command-line
    nvr-systool reset2defaults
  3. Re-open the NVR landing page in a browser (http://<NVR_APPLIANCE_IP>/).

For more options, type "nvr-systool --help" to list other administrative parameters. The nvr-systool is used by the NVR management console where this CLI approach is equivalent to the GUI steps.


Option Three: Hard Reset

  1. Press and hold the Reset button (Crescent Moon shape) located below the Power button for 10+ seconds. The device will take up to 60+ seconds to restore the default configuration and return to the original factory version.
  2. Re-open the NVR landing page in a browser (http://<NVR_APPLIANCE_IP>/).
