EdgeRouter - Reset to Factory Defaults

Readers will learn how to reset an EdgeRouter to factory defaults.

There are several reset methods available:

Hardware Reset

  • Runtime - Use the reset button while the system is up and running.
  • Power-on - Use the reset button while powering up the device.

Software Reset (Configuration Only)

  • Reset the start-up (config.boot) configuration file to defaults from the GUI or CLI. 

If all of the options above fail or are unavailable to you, the last option is the last resort recovery. Only use this after trying all of the previous methods.


Runtime Reset

ATTENTION: This feature requires EdgeOS firmware version v1.1.0 or higher.

To perform a runtime reset, follow the steps below:

  1. The device should be up and running. If the device is just powered on and still booting, wait until booting is completed.
  2. Press and hold the reset button.
  3. The right LED on the right-most Ethernet port will start flashing.
  4. Continue holding the reset button for approximately 10-15 seconds until the LED turns on (solid / no flashing).
  5. A few seconds after the LED turns on, it will turn off again indicating that the reset has been completed.
  6. You can let go of the reset button and the unit will automatically reboot.
  7. Wait for the reboot to complete.
  8. Connect to the eth0 port and manage the device using the default IP address (192.168.1.1)

Power-on Reset

To perform a power-on reset, follow the steps below:

  1. Disconnect the power adapter from the unit.
  2. Press and hold the reset button while re-connecting the power adapter to the unit.
  3. The right LED on the right-most Ethernet port will start flashing.
  4. Continue holding the reset button for approximately 10-15 seconds until the LED turns on (solid / no flashing).
  5. A few seconds after the LED turns on, it will turn off again indicating that the reset has been completed.
  6. You can let go of the reset button and the unit will automatically reboot.
  7. Wait for the reboot to complete.
  8. Connect to the eth0 port and manage the device using the default IP address (192.168.1.1).

Configuration Reset

ATTENTION: only reset the start-up (config.boot) configuration file and will not clear any other system changes.

To perform a configuration reset, follow either of the two steps below:

GUI: Access the Graphical User Interface (GUI).

1. Navigate to the System tab in the bottom-left of the GUI.

2. Reset the configuration to defaults by pressing the button in the Reset Config to Default section.

3. The EdgeRouter will prompt for a device reboot to complete the reset.

4. Wait for the reboot to complete.

5. Connect to the eth0 port and manage the device using the default IP address (192.168.1.1).

CLI: Access the command line interface (CLI). You can do this using the CLI button in the GUI or by using a program such as PuTTY.

1. Overwrite the current start-up (config.boot) file with the default start-up file (config.boot.default).

sudo cp /opt/vyatta/etc/config.boot.default /config/config.boot

2. Reboot the EdgeRouter.

reboot 
Proceed with reboot? [confirm]

3. Wait for the reboot to complete.

4. Connect to the eth0 port and manage the device using the default IP address (192.168.1.1).
