EdgeRouter - How to Configure an Interface


Overview


Readers will learn how to configure an interface manually on an EdgeRouter. An easier way to create interfaces would be by using the Setup Wizard in the EdgeRouter's WebUI.

NOTES & REQUIREMENTS:
Applicable to the latest EdgeOS firmware on all EdgeRouter models. Basic networking knowledge is required.

GUI: Access the Graphical User Interface (GUI).

1. Add a firewall rule that allows the HTTPS traffic to reach the UNMS server.

Dashboard > Actions (eth1) > Config

Description: LAN
Enable: checked
Address: Manually Define IP Address
192.168.10.1/24
MTU: 1500
Speed: Auto-Negotiation
Proxy ARP: unchecked

CLI: Access the command line interface (CLI). You can do this using the CLI button in the GUI or by using a program such as PuTTY.

1. Enter Configuration Mode 

configure  

2. Set IP Address

set interfaces ethernet eth1 address 192.168.10.1/24

3.  Set other interface parameters

Multiple configuration options are available. To view all options for an interface, enter "set interfaces ethernet eth<x> and press the ? key or tab key twice.

set interfaces ethernet eth1 ?
Possible completions:
  address       IP address
  bandwidth     Bandwidth parameters
  bond-group    Assign interface to bonding group
  bridge-group  Add this interface to a bridge group
  description   Description
  dhcp-options  DHCP client (IPv4) options
  dhcpv6-options
                DHCPv6 options
  dhcpv6-pd     DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation options
  disable       Disable interface
  disable-link-detect
                Ignore link state changes
  duplex        Duplex mode
  firewall      Firewall options
  ip            IPv4 routing parameters
  ipv6          IPv6 routing parameters
  mac           Media Access Control (MAC) address
  mirror        Incoming packet mirroring destination
  mtu           Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU)
  poe           Power over Ethernet (PoE) settings
  pppoe         PPPOE unit number
  redirect      Incoming packet redirection destination
  speed         Link speed
  traffic-policy
                Traffic-policy for interface
  vif           Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) ID
  vrrp          Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP)
 

4. Commit and Save Changes

In operational mode of the CLI you can use "show interfaces" to view the status of interfaces. This information will also show on the EdgeOS GUI Dashboard.
